At last, Sofitel So, a playful luxury take on its more conservative ‘big sister’ Sofitel Hotel has opened right smack in the middle of Singapore’s CBD. There are only two Sofitel So hotels in the world, the other one being in Bangkok. Here’s an exciting fact about Sofitel So- the uniform of the front office staff is designed by none other than Mr. Karl Lagerfeld. What’s even more exciting, is the fact that the hotel brought with it Singapore’s first female hotel executive chef, Anne-Cecile Degenne, who is at the helm of the hotel’s new restaurant and bar, Xperience.
Xperience offers international cuisine through French style cooking and prides itself on its “culinary journey of the senses” menu, which is a bit of a stretch from your usual casual night out affair. Food is categorized under culinary experiences – so be prepared to decide between “smoky, silky, spicy, zesty and crunchy” types of food.
Aside from selecting dishes according to their flavours and textures, you can also choose the portion size for each dish, allowing more flexibility because you can order for two or for twelve! XS is considered a tapas size, XM is considered enough food for one person and XL is a sharing platter.
One of the things you would immediately notice as you enter the restaurant is a one huge bed, which is consistent with the hotel’s playful theme. You can reserve this bed and the whole idea is for guests to have an in-bed experience with their meal and the chef will also explain the menu to you personally. If quirkiness isn’t in your DNA, then opt for a normal table and enjoy the restaurant’s in-house DJ spinning tunes.
Now onto the food…
Chef Anne-Cecile said that the hotel’s location being right next to one of Singapore’s famous hawker centers Lau Pa Sat means that she has to be extra creative in coming up with her menu items, which is inspired by all her travel around the world. This is definitely apparent in her choice of ingredients mixture, such as Foie gras & truffle siew mai, which was simply divine. The chili crab tacos were also pretty darn tasty, which uses Mexican chili and kafir lime oil.
The next course of roasted lamb, lentils, coconut & curry however was definitely the winner! The succulent lamb fillet, combined with lentils, on a bed of curry foam. Yum!
And what would a meal be without a scrumptious dessert? The banana and passion fruit dessert is an absolute must-try. The melted bananas and passionfruit pulp was enveloped by a crunchy caramel snap cylinder, with an added yummy bonus of creamy mouse on each end. Bliss!
Xperience is definitely a great new alternative venue for work lunch, or after-work dinner, especially if you’re up for trying something fun and different.
