I don’t know whether it’s age, metabolism or just simply that I’ve reached a plateau with my exercise/diet routine, but I can not, for the life of me, seem to shift the extra couple of pounds I’ve put on of late (oh thank you chicken rice in all your hip-bustingly good glory.)
I’ve enrolled in package after package of fitness fixes which definitely keep those fitness levels up, but don’t quite help me shift those last few lbs. It was at the end of one such package when I was having a good old moan (the state of my tummy seems to be my go-to conversation at the moment, oh my lucky friends), that someone mentioned Hypoxi to me. As a huge wimp, I had explored various alternative treatments but as they all seemed to mention some type of ‘down-time’ or ‘pain factor’ – they all got a firm cross from me on the pain meter. Thankfully Hypoxi is different and most importantly, pain free. More exercise routine with a twist than anything else, Hypoxi promises to rid you of the parts regular exercise and diet can’t reach. Formulated to increase your blood flow and enable the break down of fats and stubborn cellulite (yay), the good folks at Hypoxi say that results can be seen after just a few, easy cardio sessions. Needless to say I practically ran down after hearing this, of course I didn’t, I got a cab – which could explain why I’m in this position but lets leave the finger pointing for another day.
So what exactly is Hypoxi? Well, to put it simply, it’s a patented method of reducing body circumference, stubborn fat and cellulite through a recognised method using easy cardio training. Hypoxi isn’t just about losing weight; it’s about losing circumference, meaning actual, noticeable difference. They recommend to take 12 sessions over the course of three to four weeks, which means just a couple of sessions per week and say you can expect to lose between one to three kilos and around 8cms.
So how does it work? Well – first thing first. I have to say, the people at the Hypoxi studios are just lovely. Run by the wonderful Margaret, the team are friendly, professional and just an absolute joy. No finger wagging judging going on here, just friendly, enthusiastic and encouraging staff. Onto the sessions, well each one lasts just over 40 minutes (20 minutes on each machine), but on the first session and the half way session, it takes just over an hour as the team take the measurements of your stomach, hips, thighs and legs, just so that you can actually see how the treatment is working.
Each session starts with a weigh in, which leaves no room for cheating or slip-ups! And then it’s onto the machines. The first machine is based on cupping and is designed to get the blood pumping (remember, this is Hypoxi’s ethos of getting rid of fat) and help with the dread cellulite. I have to be honest, it’s rather an odd contraption as you are placed in a scuba suit with almost massage contraptions working away – at times I did feel like a bubble in a bottle of fizzy water but none the less, it was relaxing.
Then it’s onto the bikes. First of all you are fitted with a compression skirt (to help with the blood flow) and slotted into the bike like a jigsaw puzzle. Heart rate monitors are attached to your leg and stomach to give you a target heart rate and pedal power to reach each session. As the machine works on almost a vacuum, you do sometimes feel like you are being gently sucked into the machine, but on the whole, sitting on the bike, reading your magazine, cycling away – it’s one of the easiest ways of losing weight we have ever found.
The only hard part is after each session there’s no carbs for six to eight hours, with no eating for the first two hours after each session. But on the good side, they do also say no more exercise that day, hurrah.
So did it work? Well honestly yes, it did. Like the good student that I am, I stuck to the plan religiously and cut down on my carbs, cut down on my sugar (boy was that hard), and I upped my exercise on my off days. I’m pleased to report that I lost just over 3kgs and a total of 16cms from all around my body – impressive or what! While that sounds like a lot of cm’s, what it means in terms of clothing is that my once tight trousers are now back to fitting properly. What’s even better, I can really notice an improvement in my cellulite so no more hours of rubbing expensive creams in night after night for me!
Would I do it again? Absolutely, young or old, pre or post baby, fit or unfit, it really is one of the best weight loss solutions around.
