Fun fact about me – I am recently single (hopefully that isn’t too much of an over-share). With V-Day right around the corner, it’s been no surprise that friends are wondering if I’ll be channeling Beyoncé’s independent ferocity and eschewing all things lovey-dovey or if I’m going to fall into a pit of rom-coms and a self-prescribed course of red wine. Want to know another fun fact? I haven’t quite decided yet!
What I do know though, is that films and wine go hand in hand so, whether you’re a love-bug or a romance-o-phobe, I’ve compiled a list of personal film faves to help see you through this warm and fuzzy festival… that is unless you’ve already booked your tickets for 50 Shades of Grey…
For the romantics
When Harry Met Sally
Harry (Billy Crystal) meets Sally (Meg Ryan) in college and they road trip to New York. After deciding that men and women can’t just be friends they go their separate ways but keep running into each other over the years. So, is it just friendship or are they soul mates? Plus, the iconic Meg Ryan scene in Katz’ Deli is reason enough to stick this flick on… I’ll have what she’s having!
Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Star-crossed lovers? Check! Awesome cast? Check! Visually gorgeous scenes? Check! Oh it must be Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 adaptation of Shakepeare’s iconic work. If you didn’t read or see this play back in your school days then I’ll try not to spoil the ending (hint, bring tissues!) but be prepared to fall for a fresh-faced Leo DiCaprio all over again as he defies an ancient family feud to fight for the girl of his dreams.
In the unlikeliest of circumstances, a Hollywood A-lister (played by Julia Roberts) falls for a baby-faced and pretty awkward bookstore owner (portrayed effortlessly by Hugh Grant) in the heart of London. British romantic-comedy at its best, this hilarious and heart-warming film is an absolute favourite of mine.
Nobody puts Baby in a corner. And it’s safe to say this film has never seen the corner of my shelves, I could re-watch this classic over and over, and not get sick of it. Jennifer Grey plays Baby (don’t worry that’s not her real name) who falls for dance instructor Johnny, played by Patrick Swayze, while vacationing with her family. It’s a forbidden love story with awesome dance routines… what’s not to love?
I would be shocked if any of our Sassy Girls haven’t seen The Notebook (hello Ryan Gosling!), but just in case: this screen adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ book tells the story of a boy and a girl from different backgrounds whose love is tested by meddling parents, distance and love rivals. Plus, it also features the 2005 MTV Movie Award’s “Kiss of the Year”.
For the anti-cupids
500 Days of Summer
Technically this film would fall into either category on this list, being a thoroughly modern and refreshing take on love and relationships. Zooey Deschanel is the quirky girl that everyone wants and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the guy getting over their breakup. Set in a non-linear fashion, this alternative rom-com is proof that just because someone likes the same crap as you, doesn’t mean that they’re your soulmate.
This movie offers more than a few life lessons in detachment and success, plus it has Brad Pitt in all his rippling, shirtless glory. By freeing yourself from the shackles of modern life and its expectations, and opening yourself up to pain can you truly understand who you are and what you’re willing to do to achieve your goals. Tyler Durden is a god…
The Hunger Games
Go for the marathon and stick on all three of The Hunger Games films! Katniss Everdeen (played by the impeccable Jennifer Lawrence) is one badass female heroine who is loyal to her loved ones, stands up for what she believes in and can shoot an arrow like a boss. This film is a box office bullseye!
Thelma & Louise
The ultimate road trip/BFF film, Thelma & Louise is a story of love and friendship that anyone who’s ever felt an itch to escape will relate to. Two single ladies on the run, this old-school movie also manages to feature Brad Pitt without his shirt on, I’m sensing a trend…
Really, need I say more?
