Perched on top of Cape Panwa on the tip of the island of Phuket, cupped by the azure waters of the Andaman Sea, Sri Panwa offers mesmeric views like no other, with bougainvillea tumbling over the walls, a faint smell Thai basil in the air – and a butler at your service.
You could call it paradise. I sure would. I love Thailand. Part of the lure of living in Southeast Asia is the cornucopia of islands you can escape to for the weekend, and Phuket is the perfect place to dip your toe into the unforced, languorous routine of the Thais. After you’re done boozing up a storm on the year-round spring break beaches of Patong, it’s time to grow up and glam up and Sri Panwa is the best way to.
The villas in Sri Panwa have been designed to look like jewel boxes, glass-walled residence that floats above your personal, private infinity pool that looks out to sea. Yes, all their pool villas have a 12-metre infinity pool that snakes around the bedroom and the separate living space so that you could literally roll off your bed and right into the pool (and you can trust me when I say I did that). Naturally, to accompany the luxe living, there’s also a day bed, two bathrooms, an outdoor tub, terrace and sun loungers and a fully-stocked mini bar and fridge that’s completely complimentary.
It’s almost like Sri Panwa has a don’t-lift-a-finger policy while you’re vacationing. You have a round-the-clock on-call assistant who will cater to your every need, including organising an in-villa BBQ or dinner, or even if you need help unpacking or running a bath. Tuk-tuks will be called upon to take you around the resort whether you need to pop by the spa for a massage or to the beach for a quick dip.
While you don’t want to leave your very own James Bond villain’s lair, you must absolutely dine at Baba Soul. While hotel restaurants tend to dumb down local fare for tourists, Sri Panwa does no such thing. You can choose the level of spiciness your food is cooked in (from “European spicy”, to “Thai spicy”); the menu is eclectic with local fares cooked with ingredients sourced from farmers and grocers in close proximity to the resort. Be sure to order the crispy duck salad, scallops with local herbs in coconut soup, and don’t leave without slurping a hearty bowl of tom yum.
You’d want to stop backflipping into your private pool for one more important feature of the resort – the Cool Spa. It’s a wonder the staff get any work done with the views they get, but I promise you, their 90-minute massage will see you kneaded and pounded to a pulp of blissful oblivion. Make sure you get the coconut scrub (actual coconut flakes!) so you get the perfect island experience.
Sri Panwa sets itself aside as a top notch luxurious resort with an attention to detail like no other, which is why if you look hard enough, you can probably see a Thai princess bobbing in the water – but only till she gets a perfect selfie.
