On March 23, Singapore lost a great leader. The passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew has cast a sombre mood on the nation and as the whole country mourn their loss, a musical three years in the making about our founding father was preparing for the announcement of its world premiere that will take place on 24 July 2015 at the Mastercard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands.
This humble tribute titled The LKY Musical is set against the backdrop of the Singapore story and is a musical adaptation of Mr Lee’s remarkable life in building Singapore to the First World country that we are today. The much-anticipated musical will showcase Mr Lee’s many trials and tribulations over a period of about 20 years and the titular role will be played by theatre veteran, Adrian Pang. Also featuring a significant person in Mr Lee’s life, Mrs Lee Kuan Yew will be played by Singapore’s top host and actress, Sharon Au.
Mrs Lee was a very intelligent and poised woman and little was known about her, except for her endless support to Mr Lee. Their love story (which will be depicted in the musical) traces back to their early days in university and his devotion to his wife was unparalleled. On taking up the role as Mrs Lee, Sharon commented that “it is such an honour to play this great role model, who was the partner and an equal to the architect of modern Singapore. This is going to be Singapore’s own timeless love story.”
In addition to a stellar cast, the musical also boasts an experienced team. Multi-talented performer and composer Dick Lee wrote the music for the production with lyrics by Stephen Clark, an award winning playwright and lyrics, and Meira Chand, an established London-born author who wrote the story for the musical.
No changes have been made to the production since Mr Lee’s passing but Pang, says that his departure has given the musical “all sorts of added significance and poignancy”.
This humbling tribute will be one that many will be certain to catch so get your tickets here if you’d like a glimpse into Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s life.
