“It always starts with a problem. For me, it started when I was on a sabbatical. I was sailing so much, and at one point of time I got so frustrated that I couldn’t find swimwear that fitted on me. The only brands that were available to me in Singapore were ones from the States, Europe or Australia and they didn’t fit the Asian body as well as swimwear should. So I decided to make my own swimwear label!
Why K.Blu? K, being the first letter of the first name of my first child. I didn’t know the sex of the baby when I was pregnant at that point in time, but I knew I wanted the name of my first child to start with the letter K.
When I started the label, I wanted everything to be blue to reflect my love for the ocean. I couldn’t stop once I started on one collection; there have been shell prints which obviously has been inspired by the shore, there’s colour blocking with different hues of blue too.
I think we’re in an age where women are no longer viewed as the weaker sex. Women-owned businesses are rampant now, and there are lots of help available, whether it’s from the government or business owner mentorship, or incubator entrepreneurship programmes.
For me, my struggles were, when I started, it was hard for an Asian brand to reach out to an Asian crowd. People are very brand conscious and they are attracted to international labels, however, in the last few years, there have been a shift and people are not only looking towards Asia to set trends and voices in the markets, people are also looking to support emerging designers and independent labels. Singapore’s fashion industry has been very supportive of local brands too.
My advice for people with big and ideas and want to their own #girlboss? Research. Research as much as you can. I made so many rookie mistakes that were easily avoidable had I done ample research, and seek out mentors when you’re starting out. It’s always good to have a sounding board you can bounce off ideas with.”
