We’re always up for a session of devouring sugary treats, especially if they’re in the form of a yummy slice of cake. And as the festive season rolls around, we find ourselves giving in to temptation, daydreaming about log cakes and bundt cakes as we count down the days until Christmas! So we did what we do best, rounding up some of the best local cake stores for you to try out, while listing out some Christmas offerings which have got our hearts (and tummies) in a frenzy!
Nothing too fancy or over-the-top, Plain Vanilla (like their name suggests) brings it back to the bare basics. It’s no wonder why people repeatedly fawn over their cupcakes, each not only flavourful but prettily decorated as well. Baking is so deep their bones they never seem to stop, seemingly the reason why they’re always shaking things up with some sort of cupcake special. This week sees a combination of familiar Christmas ingredients such as peppermint candy canes and gingerbread added to their cupcake mix!
Cat & The Fiddle
Any cheesecake lover will thank the heavens that Cat & The Fiddle decided to set up shop as Singapore’s first online specialist cheesecake store. Offering premium cheesecakes in 15 specially created flavours, there’s even an assorted one titled “Fickle Feline” for ultimate cheesecake fans who would love a pinch of every available flavour. We love their adorable names, like The Modern Duke’s Pudding and Queen Of Hearts; adding whimsical vibes to their glorious cheesecakes.
Many are familiar with the extravagant and elegant setting of an Antoinette cafe, coupled with their equally divine array of desserts on display. It’s one of the top local spots to get your fix of French fare, and boy their cake selection always looks so inviting we’re spoilt for choice. If you happen to be making a visit during the festive season though, be sure to have a peek at their selection of Christmas cakes! We don’t have a favourite yet, but the Terrarium is calling out to us with its whimsical appearance, and it helps that we were told cocoa sponge cake and dark rum sit within.
Chalk Farm was once an online cake store, but has since expanded to take residence in both The Paragon and Parkway Parade. Offering an abundance of mouthwatering flavours, such as Coffee Walnut Sponge and Rocky Road, none can reign over their Kueh Salaat, a two-tiered Nonya inspired cake. And if you’ve tried it, you’d know what a gastronomical delight it is. If you’re looking for something more Christmas specific though, we reckon it’s going to be a tough decision, although their Dulce De Leche Marble Cheesecake and Brown Butter Marmalade Loaf have our vote.
Located at Greenwood Avenue, Lana Cakes may not look like your typical modern cake store at first glance, but inside, you’ll find one of the most stellar chocolate fudge cakes you’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting. Owner Violet Kwan has had over 40 years of experience in the business, so we assure you every crumb that comes out of her oven will taste like pure heaven. And although their chocolate fudge cake doesn’t look as fancy as some others out there, we’re sure even after a mouthful you’ll agree it’s worth every penny.
A quaint little cake store at Jalan Besar, Butter Studio serves desserts made with only top quality products, coupled with a secret ingredient: pure effort. They put every inch of soul into making the perfect treats, and you’ll be able to taste their love for the art of baking once their cakes melt in your mouth. If local flavours are your thing, trying their Gula Melaka cupcake is a definite must! For the holidays, Butter Studio has created a selection of the most delightful looking Christmas cakes, topped off with shimmering macarons and Santa faces!
Mad About Sucre
Mad About Sucre makes the most amazing looking cakes, and judging by their high profile clientele consisting of both local and international celebrities, we’re sure their desserts taste as awesome as they look! Backed by a marvelous portfolio of intricate multi-tiered cakes, we’re starting to believe there’s nothing Mad About Sucre can’t create. Apparently, they’re mad about Christmas too, offering customized Christmas hampers where customers can choose from a total of 18 different treats like classic log cakes, macaroons and more.
The Pantler team owns some mad skills. Besides long time experience in the baking world, they’ve even got an award-winning pastry chef who once worked at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo. And that’s a sure indication that their desserts won’t disappoint. On display at their Telok Ayer branch is a lovely selection of Japanese inspired cakes and pastries, with signatures such as their Pantler Roll Cake and Ricotta Cheese Tart sitting at the top of the favourites list. You’ll also find handcrafted Christmas cakes here, each housing rich flavours you and your loved ones can indulge in while celebrating the festivities.
Patissier executes top French techniques when crafting their desserts, while throwing in their own personal flavour into the mix. Another major talent in the industry, their head baker was once trained at the Cordon Bleu in London. Nothing seems to faze the Pantler either, as they shape their way around countless 3D cakes in every form and colour. proving they’re true masters of the art. For Christmas they’ve got an array of simple festive cakes on sale, but our favourite has got to be the one which features an adorable Reindeer face!
