Meet our December That Girl, Lynsey Lim!
These days, we can’t get enough of natural, small-batch beauty products. We’re obsessed with Handmade Heroes, a paraben-free, preservative-free and synthetic-free brand that proves that going natural doesn’t have to rule our chic or luxurious. #GirlBoss, Lynsey Lim has always been extra careful about the products she slathers on and that eventually led to her concocting her own recipes and products. This inventive beauty puts all her heart and love into her brand and this passion clearly translates in all her products. We caught up with this talented lass to discuss her line and all things natural.
Hi, Lynsey! Tell us about your background. Have you always been interested in beauty?
Hi Sassy girls! I have always been interested in beauty and all things natural. It was only natural for me to combine the two together. Since young, you could always find me experimenting with DIY beauty recipes: face masks, body moisturisers and make-up.
What lies behind your passion to supply the beauty world with natural, skincare? Why do you think it is important to use natural/organic and sustainably-produced products for your skin?
A large part of my passion is to not just provide a natural skin care option to women but to also make natural skincare affordable and accessible to everyone.
Our skin is the largest organ in our body and a lot of the time people don’t know what they are putting on their skin. With using 100% all natural skin care, the ingredients are plant-based, which you can feel safe using.
What has been the most rewarding thing about starting a natural beauty brand?
Hearing customers rave about Handmade Heroes products always brings a huge smile to my face. I received a handwritten note from four girls about our Coco-friggin’ Fantastic Lip Tints, it even included some really cute doodles of our products. That made my entire month itself, and it is little things like that make all the hard work so worth it.
Which Handmade Heroes product could you not live without?
Without a doubt, it is the Drop Dead Gorgeous Dry Shampoo. I hate to admit this, but there are more than a couple of times where work ends at 4am, I am dead beat and don’t have the time to wash my hair. Drop Dead Gorgeous Dry Shampoo comes in and saves the day and leaves me looking fresh for an early morning meeting the next day. No one can tell the difference!
We’re madly in love with your lip balms! Would you ever consider making them in different tints?
Definitely! Our lip balms and tints are actually one of our best sellers, and we are looking to expand the colour range in the near future!
Where do you source your ingredients?
Our ingredients are mostly sourced locally or from the United States and our organic jasmine rice is from Thailand.
What changes and trends have you seen in the healthy beauty movement over the last few years?
There has definitely been a shift towards green and natural beauty skin care. Consumers are more conscious and aware of what goes into their skincare products, and more discerning over quality.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career?
Handmade Heroes started off as a one-woman show selling from a booth at pop-up markets. The biggest challenge was transitioning it from the start up that it was to a company that now retails in more than 10 different locations. It involved expanding operations rapidly and developing a lot of new processes – all while still up keeping our values and quality.
What inspires you?
I draw most of my inspiration from traditional Asian beauty methods and giving it a modern take. For example, using rice to tone the skin (a traditional Japanese and Malay ‘bedak’ method) or using turmeric to brighten to skin. I love learning about these methods, how these methods were passed down through the generations.
What does a day in the life of Lynsey look like?
A typical day starts off with at least 12-14 hours of work – this mostly includes production, meetings and experimenting. During the busy seasons, it goes up to about 16 hours. It is as unglamourous as its sounds and unfortunately; work-life balance is something I have yet to achieve.
What are your favourite restaurants and spots in Singapore?
Culina at Dempsey Hill is a long time favourite of mine. I also love Brownice for the best vegan pizzas and ice cream (plus, they are so much healthier!). Both never fail to please any one I bring there.
Describe your perfect weekend.
Any weekend where I get to sleep in till 12 noon and spend the rest of the day in PJs is just perfect.
What do you like to do in your free time?
You can usually find me in the kitchen, whipping up a healthy and clean meal. All the other times, I will either be on a couch running a TV marathon or on a yoga mat distressing.
Do you have any advice for aspiring #girlbosses?
If there were ever an opportunity to do what you love for a living – go for it! Sometimes it only takes a leap of faith and, you wouldn’t know what you are truly capable of until you do it.
What are your plans for yourself and Handmade Heroes in the near future?
It is all about Handmade Heroes for me. I plan to take Handmade Heroes international – we are already on Amazon with free shipping, and we are also looking to expand further in South East Asia – namely Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand. We are incredibly excited!
Thanks so much for your insight, Lynsey! You’re a real inspiration to all us Sassy Girls! Special thanks to the vivacious Shamsydar Ani Photography for the awesome images of Lynsey!
