We chat with this month’s Sassy Super Styler Trishna Goklani, freelance stylist, fashion design graduate and blogger behind Accents of Gold!
Young, talented and undeniably chic, Trishna Goklani has been on our style radar for a while now. Having been featured on both local and international magazines (Style Magazine and Vogue Japan have recently joined that long list!), we’re not the only ones you can trust with this chic little lady’s level of style. We love a girl who lives by comfort while still looking impeccable (because we can only wear our platform heels for so long!), so Trishna’s easy-going outfits have scored major points in our sartorial books. We caught up with the effortlessly stylish fashion design graduate on her influences, what nudged her to start a blog (following her large pool of Instagram followers, of course), and her favourite places for a scrumptious weekend brunch.
Hi Trishna! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a 22-year old who drinks way too much coffee on a daily basis. I like to style, photograph and design things; in other words, I like wearing many hats.
Your blog Accents of Gold is relatively new. Could you tell us what made you start blogging?
I really love taking pictures and I thought I needed a platform that’s more intimate than Instagram and that’s what made me start my blog! I needed a push from friends, though.
We heard your mother tongue is Mandarin. How did that come about?!
I’m Indian by birth and in no way Chinese, if you were wondering! I get that a lot. My grandma made my mom take Chinese back in the day because it was the second most common language in Singapore and she thought that it’d be good for her future. Of course, my mom knew Tamil through interacting with her family and so do I! I may speak Chinese but it does not make me any less proud of being Indian!
What do you aim to do more of this year?
I’ve deemed 2016 the year of travel for me. I’ve thought a lot about what I’d like to accomplish this year and travel is sitting at the top of my list. Also, I’d like to get back to doing a little bit more of art and photography.
Do you have any style icons that you look up to?
I take inspiration from everywhere! But one of my favourite style icons is Vanessa Hong from The Haute Pursuit. She’s effortlessly chic and still so casual – a look I’d like to embody myself.
How would you describe your personal style?
I’m more of a mood kind of person. The way I dress depends a lot on the way im feeling on the day. As much as I’d love to prance around in high heels all day, comfort is key for me so it’s sneakers all the way!
We love how you’re always wearing clothes that seem to be away from usual trends. Can you share with us how to work the bell bottom look as well as you do?
The key is confidence! To be honest, there are some outfits that require a bit of pep talkin’ beforehand. But ultimately, it’s how you adopt a style to make it yours.
How do you spend your weekends?
I spend my time with friends and family of course! Family is always number one for me. I also like to do artsy things, exercise and bask away in the weekend feelz with my friends over video games and beer!
What’s a good place for brunch in Singapore (since you always seem to be trawling cafés all over the island for the most fabulous food)?
Okay, I have a few favourites: Pacamara, Kith Café, Paddy Hills, Oriole… But besides the obvious café food I really, really love local food. Chin Mee Chin Confectionary at East Coast is a great local breakfast joint that’s worth the visit.
Do you have any advice for anyone that’s looking to be a part of the fashion industry?
Be passionate and never be afraid to fall. One lesson I’ve learnt is to be realistic. I will fail. I will be wrong. I won’t always win. But what’s most important is to pick yourself up every time you fall.
Any memorable travel destinations with great shopping?
Shopping is barely the first agenda for my travel plans, but the one time I remember going crazy was in Primark in London. Woah, the lady who did my tax refunds for me sniggered at my unusually long receipt.
What’s one thing in your wardrobe (accessories, clothing, bag or shoes) that’s on heavy rotation?
SNEAKERS!!! I’m a huge fan of my Superga sneakers because they’re so versatile. Other than that, I’m obsessed with lace-up shoes and leather bags.
