It seems that the era of the #nomakeupselfie and #iwokeuplikethis is here to stay. The stripped-down look of the barely-there, fresh-faced, radiant beauty is so in demand right now that we had to find out how to put our best effortless face forward. The key to mastering this look is to constantly remind yourself that less is always more. We’ve rounded up five simple steps for you to create a fuss-free, no-nonsense, natural looking visage.
Step 1: Prep The Canvas
The key to achieving any look always starts with clear, fresh skin. To fool people into thinking that your luminous skin is nature’s gift, start by gently exfoliating, toning and moisturising your mien. Then, slather on a lightweight, oil-free sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
Tip: Drink lots of water to plum skin from the inside. If you’re dehydrated, your skin will look and feel dry too. So make sure you’re getting enough H2O for your skin!
Step 2: Get Tinted
One of the most important no-make-up beauty steps is to incorporate a natural base. Ditch the heavy foundation and even out your skin with a healthy dose of natural sheer colour from a tinted moisturiser or BB cream. Real natural skin is never matte so finish by applying translucent powder; but only areas that get oily throughout the day like your forehead, nose, and chin.
Tip: If you have any blemishes or dark circles around the eyes, be sure to use a light-reflecting concealer and let them stay undercover. Light-reflecting concealers are more natural and they disguise small-to-moderate imperfections well without caking up the face.
Step 3: Fake A Flush
Grab a cream blush that matches your skin’s natural flush in a pink or peach colour and lightly blend three to four dots of product into areas where the sun would fall on the face, mainly on the apples of the cheeks. You’d want to achieve a post-workout flush – nothing too red or pink.
Tip: Avoid makeup with shimmer or sparkle if you’re hoping to nail a natural-looking flush. Pat the blush onto your cheeks and other areas like the bridge of your nose and forehead and then blend outwards. You can even use the same cream blush on your lips!
Step 4: Open Your Peepers
Instead of the usual eyeliner, try tightlining. Apply eye liner in between your lash line; it really opens up the eyes and makes them appear fuller without any obvious liner! Give lashes a subtle boost by curling them and then swiping them with a coat of brown mascara.
Tip: If you’d like to brighten up the eye area more, use cream or skin-tone eye shadows that sit naturally on the skin. Don’t forget to fill in those sparse brows with some brow powder to create a natural and subtle arch.
Step 5: Pucker Up
The principal rule for a natural lip is to use a tinted lip balm butter or lip gloss. Creamy or semi-sheer lipsticks work best with this look. Apply your favourite lip product straight from the tube or dab it on your lips with your fingers and you’re done!
Tip: Mist your skin with a make-up-setting spray or some rose water as the final step before heading out. You can also use the spray throughout the day to help keep your no-make-up look stay fresh.
