PastaMania whips up new pasta creations for Singapore’s birthday.
Back in early June, PastaMania joined the SG50 Jubilee celebrations with the launch of four new pasta creations boasting a taste of Singapore. The dishes were the winners from the annual Chef Mania competition in which PastaMania Chefs dust off the whisks and sauce pans and show off their culinary expertise. This year, the four winning main dishes pay homage to Singapore’s most notorious and sought after flavours Chili Crab, Salted Egg, and Sambal, with the side dishes and desserts hitting the Rojak and Goreng Pisang notes.
We were invited down to sample the lot… and it was a lot!
- Mum’s Salted Egg Softshell Crab – a tribute to a zichar favourite by tossing spaghetti and soft shell crab with a fragrant salted egg sauce
- Shiok & Spicy Chilli Crab, where two lightly battered crab claws lie atop a bed of al dente pasta covered with chillicrab sauce
- ‘Hei Bi Hiam‘ (Spicy Dried Shrimps) Barramundi which boasts a generously sized Barramundi and hei bi hiam (spicy dried shrimps)
- Prawn Sambalpura, which teases the palate with crunchy deep fried silverfish and a punchy sambal sauce
The gracious hosts put on the full spread and it was hard to decide where to dig in first, but the Sambal was calling our name. A robust flavour and spicy kick have you hurrying for another bite before you have even finished the first. The Salted Egg dish is mild mannered and well suited for most any taste palate, although a sharp contrast from the Sambal!
For those who live for the famous Singapore Chili Crab, you won’t be disappointed. While we have never had this particular flavour with pasta before, the pair go perfectly. The crab claws on top throw in a little of the traditional chili crab experience without the usual mess.
Last, but not least the Barramundi. This perfectly cooked fish literally melts in your mouth. We almost forgot there was pasta hiding underneath of it, but it shouldn’t be overlooked. Needless to say, after two appetisers, four main courses, and two desserts later, we had to be rolled to a taxi. You can bet the doggy bags of leftovers didn’t survive the night! Sadly this special SG50 menu is only available for a limited time, with it set to disappear at the end of August.
So hurry to your nearest PastaMania to try out these delectable dishes. We highly recommend the Sambal for those who like full bold flavours with a bit of spice! The Chilli Crab is one not to missed either!
