So you’re a closet Adele? Sing out loud at these Open Mic Night Cafés!
Got the voice of an angel deep inside you just waiting to be let out? You can’t just hide that kind of talent away from the world! Take advantage of the many open mic nights at various cafés and cool bars all over the city. A talent agent might just be in the audience looking for a fresh new face for showbiz, who knows? And if it’s just for fun, it makes for an entertaining night out with the girls – definitely a nice change from the typical karaoke spots!
Actors the Jam Bar
Priding itself as Singapore’s only jam bar, Actors has a loyal pool of customers and jammers that keep going back to hear and perform amazing live music! Anyone and everyone who walks through their doors is welcome to take the stage. Veteran Actors the Jam Bar goers will applaud you, fellow bar attendees will probably join you, and the music entrepreneur behind the business will love you for keeping the crowd entertained for the night.
Prince of Wales pub
Prince of Wales may be a hot spot for catching all the sports action and many a Singaporean Quiz Night, but one underrated factor is that they have open mic sessions on Sundays, starting at 4pm to 7pm. Jammers get free beer for lending their talents on stage, so if that stage fright still gets to you, down a pint and you’re ready to go!
Prince of Wales Little India, 101 Dunlop Street, Singapore 209420, Tel: (+65) 6299 0130, www.pow.com.sg
Hard Rock Café
They don’t call it Hard Rock for nothing – Hard Rock Café’s open mic nights at HPL House happen every Sunday, 7pm to 10pm and performers don’t walk away empty-handed! $50 vouchers are given to performers (a round of drinks for the girls after a job well done, perhaps?) after a 15-minute slot, which has to be arranged beforehand. Pick up a guitar and call in early to save your spot!
Hard Rock Café HPL House, 50 Cuscaden Road #05-01, Singapore 249724, Tel: (+65) 6235 5232, www.hardrock.com/cafes/singapore
Every Thursday, The Beast transforms into a home of sorts for customers with some mean pipes for hours of jam sessions accompanied by their famous Bourbon. We hear they’ve got a great sound system (long-time pub crooners will appreciate this!) and an engaging host that will keep you singing the night away without even realising. Now, where do we sign up?
Blu Jaz Cafe
Who doesn’t know Blu Jaz Cafe? At the forefront of the Kampong Glam cluster, the lively bar and its bright lights attracts anyone who comes close – mostly due to the great music they play. Open mic nights happen every second Monday of the month, and require no slot confirmations beforehand. Besides musicians, you might also find a fresh breath of poets here and there to read you a few haikus. Keep up to date on their Facebook page!
Blu Jaz Cafe, 11 Bali Lane, Historic Kampong Glam, Singapore 189848, Tel: (+65) 6292 3800, www.blujazcafe.net
The Diarists Sessions at The Music Parlour
If you’re still not convinced about attending your first open mic night, The Music Parlour will change your mind. Get a sneak peek on their Facebook page of all the awesome acts that have graced their humble place, and you’ll know you’re going to be among the greats in the country. The Diarist Sessions are the folks behind the open mic nights, so keep a lookout on their page too for updates!

Easily spotted thanks to their piano-esque shop front, Artistry is no stranger to the resident Kampong Glam goer. Aptly named Stagefright, their open mic nights happen every 2nd Wednesday of every two months. Book early, because a little birdy told us these lineups have waiting lists!
Artistry, 17 Jalan Pinang, Singapore 199149, Tel: (+65) 6298 2420, www.facebook.com/artistryspace
Aria @ SUTD
The first thing you’ll see on Aria’s page is a bunch of great photos from their Friday Plug & Play Acoustic Sessions & Open Mic – already a sign for you to sign up, stat! The bistro at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) brings a younger crowd, so you won’t have to worry about struggling to find some new friends while you’re there. While their open mic nights are a weekly showcase, you should still pen your name down as a performer beforehand so you don’t get disappointed if slots fill out fast on the night itself.
