Nestled amidst the continuous crop of cool cafés in the achingly hip Kampong Glam is a gem of a coffee spot named ARC Coffee – a 3-in-1 coffee place housing an academy, roastery and café under one roof. Serious coffee aficionados who appreciate the bean to cup process will no doubt delight in the fact that Champion of Singapore National Barista winners are serving your coffee. If you’re keen to go beyond coffee consumption and discover the coffee production part, the Academy on the second floor has a range of classes ranging from latte art training to coffee appreciation workshops.

Artisanal coffee will never go out of style, especially not in the Jalan Besar neighbourhood where hipster cafés abound much like mushrooms after rain. The poison of choice here is Liberty Coffee’s Speakeasy Blend, brewed on their fancy La Marzocco machine. Other finds worth venturing a sip are their affogato served with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream and fresh milk to make it thicker. Those who love the vibes at Chye Seng Huat Hardware will no doubt find themselves at home in 20F Specialty Coffeehouse’s modern concept in a traditional setting.

It can’t be easy being in the caffeine business, not if you’re located just opposite Chye Seng Huat Hardware and within walking distance of 20F Specialty Coffeehouse! Yet Dose! (so named because their coffee is measured according to precise dosages) manages to hold its own with their Australian-based coffee menu. With Blacklist Etude Blend from Perth used for the coffee you know your caffeine quality is on par with the stuff you’d get in the Australian café scene.

If the location of Wanna Cuppa (next to the famed Song Fa Bak Kut Teh outlet) doesn’t catch your eye, then its 1920s Gatsby inspired interior décor will definitely do the trick. What awaits you in Wanna Cuppa is their award-winning signature blend coffee beans from Justin Metcalf, one of Australia’s most renowned supplier of coffee beans and hot chocolate powder. Whatever your choice of java, Wanna Cuppa has got it covered. They’ve even got gourmet teas from Canada, which at $4 is such a bargain!

Don’t let the unassuming Tiong Bahru shophouse location of Forty Hands Coffee put you off – what it lacks in snazzy décor makes up for with its quality coffee – the kind that makes coffee connoisseurs perk up with caffeinated delight. Aside from serving fair-trade coffee, Forty Hands, (a joint collaboration between founder Harry Grover and Spa Esprit Group) is also one of the first coffee joints to offer a taste of third wave coffee in Singapore. If you need a hearty meal to go with your house blend order, Forty Hands is definitely the joint you should hit up. Oh and did we mention there’s no service tax?
