It’s not hard to find socially motivated businesses – if you know where to look. Amidst all our local talent, homegrown brand, MATTER is one that’s making big waves. A brand that’s focused on affordable luxury, thoughtful design, and provenance to create travel wear with stories to tell, founder Renyung Ho (watch out for our interview with her this month!) creates modern day pants that supports and champions alternative production models for rural textile artisans. Every bit of Ren and MATTER is inspiring because her label educates consumers on the importance of understanding and appreciating where and why something is made.
MATTER’s latest collection titled Silk Cities launches today online with the introduction of another artisan technique called Ikat. The Ikat is a traditional craft that’s essentially a tie and dye technique where yarns are dyed and then woven to achieve the final textile pattern in weaving. This new collection showcases five stunning motifs indigenous to ancient cities along the Silk Road. The various silhouettes are updated with four new styles especially focused on their unisex appeal: Modern Monpe, Lounge Lunghi, Fisher Shorts, and Easy Dhoti (our favourite!).
To further understand the beautiful process and story behind the making of the Silk Cities edition, here’s a video that showcases the making of the Ikat.
