Let’s admit it. When you have a love of food and you’ve been doing nothing but stuffing your face and feasting in December, you kinda resort to cheats to get your body in shape for that Valentine’s date.
Don’t get me wrong, I love to sweat. I eat relatively well and I’ve been hitting the gym, even consorting with the idea of jogs (urgh) but there’s just that little leftover tummy pooch that doesn’t seem to go away in time.
So when given the opportunity to try Liposonix, a non surgical, non invasive fat reduction treatment, I said sure why not. I went in, my head held high, pretending I wasn’t nervous.
Liposonix treatment uses a high intensity focused ultrasound energy. It’s the same energy source as diagnostic ultrasound but it is designed to very precisely target specific areas with high energy to destroy fat cells. Which in my case were my tummy that I’ve has since my late 20s. Practically all my life.
Consultation & Treatment
During the consultation, I had my height, weight and BMI taken before getting poked about with a marker. The marks were made on the treatment area so that the doctor would know where the probe would be placed, each square marked was the same size as the probe head. If you must know, I had 9 squares on my entire tummy in 3-3-3 configuration like a football team line up. This would be when you would find out if this treatment was for you – an ideal candidate would be someone who leads an active lifestyle, manages their diet well and is within a healthy BMI range. This treatment permanently destroys the fat cells in the treatment area but you can put it back on if you don’t manage your diet.
Consultation took about 5-10 minutes and then I changed into scrubs, and treatment began.
Disclaimer: I am a 30 year old woman who has never felt the pain of facials or extractions. There were 3 rounds of ultrasound blasting – I had my intensity cranked up to 50/60 and had no intervals. I was told this was the highest that he’s done and usually other women would take breaks due to the discomfort or some cases pain. Of course there was pain – but it was bearable. No pain no gain, that’s how the saying goes doesn’t it?
Jokes aside, the first wave was not a big deal, you feel a hot sensation on your skin and that was it. The second wave, you feel this scratching sensation, nothing too alarming but definitely not OMG GET ME OUT OF THIS RIGHT NOW. The third wave left me sweating, counting down the seconds until I was done.
After the treatment, I was told that there might be bruising and slight swelling, but that it would go away within 1-2 weeks. Generally I felt sore but all in all nothing that made me want to curl up in a ball and cry. Results would generally show up in 6 – 8 weeks, in other words if you need to look your best for an occasion, make sure you book this a few months ahead.
Recovery & Results
Over the next 6 weeks, I experienced bruising and swelling a few days after the treatment. I felt so uncomfortable every time I laughed out loud. I did manage to deal with it by wearing my compression tights which kept everything in place! I tried to take progress pictures, but couldn’t see an immediate change until now. It has been 6 weeks, I have reduced my waist from a 34 to a 30, I no longer have an unsightly pooch and I definitely feel better looking in the mirror sideways. The discomfort disappeared somewhere along the 3rd or 4th week mark, bruising lasted about 4 days.
Despite my apprehension in the beginning I have to admit that Liposonix works.
