Have you ever felt that you needed to make a life change for yourself? To set goals and achieve them to your fullest potential? For me, I’ve always been fearful of taking that leap into greatness, to ignite my dormant dreams of being the best individual that I can possibly be but when I had an encounter with Sally Doherty, I knew she can help me fuel my ambitions. As founder of Outside the Lines, Sally is passionate about providing people the support and tools to create the best life for people. Through uplifting development programs, like Leap (commencing this 26th – 31st July in Bali), Sally and her partner Mandy are inspirational leaders that could certainly mould and develop women to being the best in whatever they do in life. I sat down with Sally for quick chat to find out more about her equally motivating organisation and life.
Hi Sally! Can you tell us more about yourself?
I love to laugh, good food and the company of a few close friends. I value loyalty, integrity and kindness over everything else and I live my life by these values. I have had careers across the military, corporate and not for profit within the leadership, training and coaching professions and now have my own consulting business in Singapore.
Can you share with our Sassy Girls what Outside The Lines aspires to do? What was the motivation behind this?
Mandy, my partner in crime and I are both New Zealanders and we reconnected in Singapore over a year ago. Catching up over dinner, we both realised that we had stepped out from our large corporate careers to create a different life for ourselves – one that we were more passionate about. That is when we started dreaming…. What if we created an experience together for people who are wanting to live their best life? I think we may have said these exact words at the end of the night. Now 16 months later…here we are!
How has your career as a leadership manager helped you in Outside The Lines?
Spending several years as an Officer in the Royal NZ Air Force made me appreciate how important alignment with the organisation’s values are. Loyalty and integrity are the foundations of the military. It also taught me how to be a strong leader and draw on your strengths. I have applied this learning every since.
Do you think that the people in Singapore are ready to make that big move to pursue something they truly love?
Of course! Pursuing something you truly love, doesn’t have to be a career. It could be a hobby, a goal or something you want to develop within yourself. Through our programmes, you learn skills and strategies to help make that happen. We can help you become ready.
What do you think is the main reason why people don’t make a change in their lives despite having big dreams and goals?
Oh wow, there are so many reasons that I don’t think it is just one. Through my experience as a coach, the most common reasons are; “fear of failing”, “what will people say”, “it would be a waste of my education if I did something different” or “I don’t know what I want to do”.
What can people learn and take home from the Outside The Lines series?
Our programmes are grounded in research and through facilitation and discussion it is applied to you and your goals. We take a “whole of body” approach, which means that we put our focus on strengthening the mind, body and emotions.
Desa-Seni Eco Resort is the perfect place to host us. We will have daily yoga sessions, organic food and the workshops will be held in the open air studio overlooking the gardens. We finish the day with contemplation or massage and then an intimate dinner with the group. Bliss.
What are some tips you’d like to share with someone who’s contemplating on making a big career change or setting a big goal for themselves?
- Listen to the signs of your body early. It will tell you when you are wanting to be somewhere else.
- Find a mentor or coach.
- Hang out with people who have a “can do” attitude. They will lift you up and inspire you.
- Don’t be overwhelmed by the size of the goal, break it down in to small parts and go from there.
- Nothing is irreversible. You can always change direction and shape your path as you go.
- Focus on your strengths.
- Be brave!
Will you consider taking trips to other places like Europe or America?
At this stage we are focused on running these in Asia and New Zealand….but now you have given me an idea!
What are some activities you do to relax and unwind?
I love to ride my bicycle or walk with friends. I have just discovered podcasts which are great for MRT rides and on the bus! Something that actually unwinds me is the cat and dog rescue & rehoming that I do here in Singapore. A good reminder of how you de-stress when you are doing something you love.
Where do you see Outside The Lines in the next few years?
We would love to have people seeking Outside of the Lines out after witnessing amazing changes in the lives of others. With most of the marketing taking care of itself…we could grow the business and publish our material so that more people could benefit from what we are doing. Currently we have three programmes; LEAP, LEAD and PIVOT – but there are definitely more in the horizon!
