Sassy sat down with DJ and Game of Thrones actor, Kristian Nairn in preparation for the F1. Brace yourselves, race season is coming…
Race season is around the corner and with our city totally gearing up for the big event in two weeks, we just had to get in on the action! Not only are we anticipating the party of the year, but we’re also looking forward to the incredible line-up at the F1 Podium Lounge event! Kicking off the the celebrations is Kristian Nairn, an awesome Irish DJ who’s worldly renowned for his role as the lovable Hodoring Hodor in Game of Thrones. We had the absolute honour and pleasure of catching up with the friendly giant before he sets foot in sunny Singers!
First of all, how excited are you to be headlining the F1 Podium Lounge event in Singapore?
I’m extremely excited! I’m a huge car fan, but I’m new to F1, so I can’t wait to see what it’s like. I’ve only ever flown through Singapore before, so I can’t wait to be there.
Have you been to Singapore before? What are you looking forward to see during your stay?
As I said, just passing through. I only have a short time, but I’m looking forward to trying the food, of course, and to seeing the amazing skyline at night!
Where do you find your inspiration for your music?
After being a DJ for so many years, I still love the feeling I get when I hear a song or track that I really love for the first time! It’s one of the best feelings. Every part of my life inspires me in different way… and also, it works the other way around. The inspiration I get from music definitely enters my life.
What do you usually start with when preparing for a set?
I try to do a little research to see what the crowd at the particular venue likes to listen/dance to. I don’t really change my set because of that, but I sometime might drop in a musical nod in that direction to keeps them on their toes!
Tell us about your favourite gig ever.
That’s too big a question! I’ve been so lucky to have many MANY favourite gigs and venues. And for so many different reasons! Sometimes because of the crowd feedback, the atmosphere, the music I got to play, the venue… all different. I couldn’t possibly choose.
You’ve been DJing in Ireland for some time now; can you tell us how you began your foray into acting?
I studied some drama and acting when at college and it was always a small part of my life. My agent at the time put me forward for various parts over the years and one of them led to the part of Hodor, and the rest is history!
On to the Game of Thrones! Tell us what it’s like to be a popular character?
I never expected it!! I fell in love with the character slowly but surely. He is a lovely person to play, so pure, so innocent. It’s a huge honour that people seem to have identified with my portrayal of Hodor and I’m very grateful for that.
What’s your favourite character on the show?
My favourite character is probably Lord Varys… played by Conleth Hill. Such an amazing, twisting, complicated character. I think the scenes between Littlefinger and him were some of the best in the show so far.
Please recommend two DJs to our readers that you feel deserve their attention.
I would recommend giving Croatia Squad and Giom a listen. Highly recommended!
Lastly, in a sentence, can you tell us what we can expect from your set?
A lot of noise and a LOT of bass!
