Here in Singapore, eating isn’t so much something we do, as a national pastime. With new restaurants seemingly popping up every day, sometimes it gets hard for a gal to keep track of the very best places to go.
Never fear, as we have teamed up with dining dynamo Chope, to give you the ultimate guide to eating out, that not only matches your stomach needs, but your style needs too.
There are just some times when a girl needs to put those flip flops away, whack on those high heels normally saved for special occasions and have a good old fashioned grown-up evening. In terms of style, think sleek, think sophisticated, think Victoria Beckham with her pencil skirts, crisp silk tops and sky-high heels. In terms of make-up, think less is definitely more, with a visit to the blow dry salon not going a miss either. So where to go? Well, we love the airy, chic and artsy feel of Dempsey’s The White Rabbit, the celebrity buzz and views at the Salt Grill & Sky Bar and the impossible to beat food quality of Catalunya.
Gearing up for Gatsby
When the Great Gatsby was re-worked and re-released, it didn’t just make all the girls fall for Leo again; it made the world fall for the iconic charm of Art Deco style once more. One of our absolute favourite styles, there’s something about Art Deco that brings out the romantic and whimsical in us. So, for times when we want to embrace our inner flapper girls, here’s where we head to. Central, stylish and the best Foie Gras in town, you can’t go wrong with The Black Swan. For a chilled yet luxe speakeasy vibe, there’s Fordham & Grand and for style with real substance, we love deco inspired, nose to tail eatery, Wolf. When it comes to wardrobe, rest your tired tootsies with some very 30’s kitten heels, add a nice and forgiving drop waist dress (ideal for the post-indulge bloat) and finish with some sparkle thanks to a crystal bracelet or two.
‘Cos it’s ladies night
While we wouldn’t suggest for one minute that we don’t love the men in our life, every once in a while it’s nice to, well, leave them at home and head out with the girls. So for a night on the tiles with our gal pals, it’s time to bring out the purchases we say we wanted a second opinion on but really just wanted to show off. But where to go? Well, the garden-themed cocktails at Pollen (not to mention the outstanding Mediterranean themed menu) always go down a storm. For good food guaranteed in a casual yet chic setting, we say head to The Disgruntled Chef and finally, for a dinner that you can see stretching into the early hours, the stunning Spanish-inspired tapas style Lolla, is always top of our list.
Hanging with the hipsters
Hipsters, you know the sort – they travel in packs, always talking about the newest ‘it’ place to go. They’re stylish, they’re chic and they’re almost always impossibly well fed. So, for the days when we feel like hanging with the hipsters, we don our Breton tops, pop on the denim cut offs, dig out our loafers and head to the following restaurants. There’s antlers on the walls, tweed on the seats and 26 rums behind the bar, Shelter in the Woods is made in hipster heaven. Looking for Japanese? Well look hard for Bincho as it’s disguised as a heritage coffee shop – so hipster. Last but not least, there’s Esquina – a chic hole in the wall with Michelin starred quality food.
Time to Chill
Don’t get us wrong, we love finding the latest go-to eatery, we love sipping on a cocktail in a bar so new you can still smell the paint dry, but sometimes, you just want to chill in an old favourite. You know, slip on that tried and trusted cotton skirt, shimmy on those comfy sandals and chow down on some grub you know is going to be good. On these kinds of days, you can normally find us at one of the following restaurants. Limoncello. This is the kind of laid-back Italian eatery everyone needs to go to at least once. Fresh, funky and downright delicious, it gets our vote. For good comfort food, great ambiance and perfect service, Rabbit, Carrot, Gun just gets it right every time. And finally, whether you’re limping up from a day spent under the sun or just fancy some good old honest food, Tanjong Beach Club is hard to beat (and so is their gazpacho and cheese burgers, both of which we are huge fans.)
