A new festival is coming to town, and it packs a whole lot of female punch!
Here at Sassy, we love ourselves some girl power! So when we heard about how the Betwixt Festival 2016 – an upcoming inaugural digital, interactive art festival – is being led by two driven females as a platform for other female artists, we couldn’t miss the chance to check out all the hubbub.
Happening at the ArtScience Museum and various other locations on Thursday, 25 February to Tuesday,1 March, the festival strongly supports female artists who are practicing or are interested in the forms of art that will be performed and put on display through an exhibition, an academic symposium, lectures and masterclasses, performances and screenings. Founders and producers, performance studies researcher Serena Pang, and artist and educator Ng Wen Lei of SPANG&LEI explore interdisciplinary collaboration as an interesting yet sustainable methodology; with traditional techniques of performance-making such as puppetry and performance art coexisting and working together with technology and traditional design.
Austrian artist LIA headlines the festival as one of the early pioneers of Software and Net Art. She has been creating digital art, installations and sound works since as early as 1995! Famed for merging the old with the new, expect to see a contrasting yet harmonious combo of various drawing and painting traditions with the aesthetic of digital images and algorithms.
Always wondered about the beginnings and the artistic sensibilities of computer-generated art? Catch screenings from the early 1970s to present 3D animations by pioneering artist in computer-generated art, Lillian Schwartz at the festival. Singaporean and Southeast Asian artists will also be featured as a part of Betwixt Festival’s Open Call, which covers a range of issues that challenge the ideas of human and tech.
