Okay, okay, so we’re not saying you need to go out running with the full works (because that’s just a tad over-the-top), but a girl may want to define her eyes and cover up some dark circles or a pesky zit or two sometimes. And then there are those days where we’re in so much of a rush to get from our office to the gym, that we don’t have time to wipe our make-up off – or really, if we are honest, we are just too lazy to.
So here’s a list of the best waterproof and smudge-proof make-up that won’t turn you into a horror movie wreck by the time you’re done with your sweat fest.
CLIO Waterproof Pen Liner Kill Black, $22.90 Touted as Korea’s best-selling eyeliner, this pen will give you a blacker than black line in just one swipe – and what’s more, thanks to its superb staying power, it will look like you’ve just put it on even at the end of the day. The slim pen is easy to control and the brush’s super fine tip makes the cat-eye flick easy peasy to achieve. It’s waterproof and smudge-proof and stays put even through the sweatiest hot yoga class.
Star Lash Automatic Gel Eyeliner Pencil, $14.90 I always recommend this star find (no pun intended) to all my sports teammates because it just doesn’t budge. I can put it on at 8am in the morning and a strong line is still there at 9.30pm post-intense training. The eyeliner applies smoothly without tugging at my eyelids and only comes off with make-up remover – nothing else, not even from swiping my face with a towel. A steal at under $15, this is eyeliner has a permanent home in my make-up bag.
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner, $28 A quick search for the best waterproof eyeliners on the market will show you that this Stila one will always appear on any list. Fans love the fine and flexible brush, how it’s super pigmented and dries in a flash. But the one thing everyone raves about is how it stays on all day. So take it to a double session of spin class and your eyes are going to look as pretty as they did before you started on your journey to sweat heaven.
Lioele Volume & Curling Mascara, $19.90
Ardent fans worship the curling and lifting powers of this waterproof mascara, key ingredients in the formula just keep the lashes up, up and up. Oh, and they stay that way even when you’re struggling to keep up with the shimmying in Zumba class. The slim wand defines every lash cleanly with its lightweight waterproof and smudge-proof formula, and, what’s more, it’s easy to remove at the end of the day.
Tarte Lights, Camera, Splashes 4-in-1 Waterproof Mascara, $32 On top of giving you curling, volumising and lengthening power all in one tube, Tarte’s formula includes conditioning benefits so you’re protecting your lashes while giving them the oomph they need. Plus, with no parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances or dyes, you don’t need to worry about nasty chemicals either. As promised, the mascara keeps lashes super defined and curled even after a long evening at the gym.
Dior Diorshow Black Out Waterproof Mascara, $52 Cult product Diorshow Waterproof mascara just got an upgrade and now it takes even less effort to achieve the va-va-voom intensity and thickness you want. The large brush deposits a deep, dark colour and layering is a breeze because it doesn’t clump. Head to the pool for a couple of laps with no worries – you’ll emerge as goddess-like as before you entered.
Too Faced Bulletproof Brows, $39 This cream-to-powder clay formula is a godsend for those who want soft, natural-looking brows. It does the job of filling in and defining, and you’ll look like you were blessed with perfect arches – even after a painful bout on the stair master. The product comes with a dual-sided angled and curved brush too, so convenient.
Make Up For Ever Aqua Brow Kit, $74 This product gives me exactly what I want, whether I’m after a natural look or bold brows – and they’re still there even after I’ve dripped like a cloud, from a long run. Make Up For Ever’s Aqua range was created for synchronised swimmers, so if their brows stay immaculate after their routine, yours will too. The kit comes with two little brushes – an angled and a curved – and fits in the smallest of clutches. It’s also available sans brushes.
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Colour, $30 Don’t worry about overdoing your arches with this pen because the formula comes out of this brush tip oh-so-lightly. In fact, some users have been getting away with saying “I don’t do my brows” with this product. And whether you’re perspiring from the morning walk to the office or at a body pump sesh, your brows are going to stay perfectly filled-in.
Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Waterproof Concealer, $35 Easily blendable, the finish stays seamless all day – even if you’re taking furious swings at the golf ball on a Saturday afternoon. It’s lightweight and more importantly, doesn’t feel dry. It’s got vitamins A and E and Amazonian clay to nourish your skin while quickly sorting out blemishes and uneven skin tone with its full coverage. The tube packaging makes it a cinch to use too.
Make Up For Ever Full Cover Extreme Camouflage Cream, $54 Even a high-intensity circuit class won’t budge this cream concealer, which is fantastic for days I desperately want to hide the fact that I haven’t been going to bed on time. I love the blendability of this concealer, even a haphazard 1-minute pat down with my finger on my under-eye area gives a perfect finish. Plus it has excellent coverage that looks very natural and doesn’t feel drying as the day wears on.
MAC Pro Longwear Concealer, $31 Work fast on one eye at a time with this baby. Once its liquid formula sets, it’s not going anywhere, until you wipe it off with make-up remover at the end of the day – yes, even after a crazy Crossfit workout. This super blendable concealer provides medium coverage but you can build it up to a full if you’d like.
Shiseido Perfect UV Protector (SPF50+, PA++++), $59 I absolutely love the texture of this sunblock – it’s watery-light and goes on totally smooth with no greasy feeling. In fact, it even mattifies and improves the texture of my skin. Solid sun protection with anti-aging benefits, it stays on through a sweaty bout of volleyball on the beach – tried and tested.
Philosophy Take Shelter (UVA/UVB SPF50, PA+++) Sunscreen, $52 This was the sunblock that converted me to a daily sunscreen user – I would normally otherwise only slap some on when I’m playing touch on the weekend (yes, yes, I know I should do better.) I could go on and on about this. One pump gives me the perfect amount to cover my whole face, it’s so easy to spread and has a smooth finish with zero greasiness, no white cast, I don’t feel that my fingers are icky after application, it’s fragrance free, has an SPF of 50 and is waterproof and sweat-proof. And one last thing – it has anti-aging benefits too. I rest my case.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock (SPF 50+, PA+++), $24.80 What I love about this one is its exceptional staying power. I’ve used this for day-long sports tournaments where I would only have the time to reapply once and I’m still burn free at the end of it. The sunblock goes on evenly and doesn’t leave an overly greasy feeling. At less than $30, the fairly large tube will last you a long time, giving you great value-for-money.
