Sausages – that BBQ staple, the stuff of coveted wholesome dinners. Artisanal sausages that use whole cuts of meat (none of the unidentifiable nasties, MSG, fillers and undesirable cuts) have come a long way from a ‘cheap’ meat. From gourmet dinner party worthy sausages of Italian Pork and Fennel, to raw and smoked versions – we’ve rounded up our pick of the best sausages in Singapore. If you previously ran a mile when you heard ‘chicken sausage’ fear not, we have even found tasty (antibiotic- and hormone-free) chicken sausages to be proud of. And the best part? They are all MSG free.

You will love: Chicken with Cheese & Tomato – we had these picked out for the kids but the adults were bowled over with the deliciousness of these plump, meaty, juicy sausages. We also liked their Chicken Thai Basil, Lime and Sweet Chilli (made with the zest and juice of real limes).
Sausages: More than a whopping 35 flavours – raw and smoked (cooked) – from Mildly Spicy Lamb Merguez ($26/kg) to the German pork Nürnberger Bratwurst ($25/kg).

Meat sourced from: Spanish and Australian pork for cooked sausages, Canadian pork for fresh sausages
Credentials: No MSG and fillers. Raw sausages made in the shop are free from added chemicals, additives, preservatives, fillers and added MSG. All sausages (smoked and raw) have natural casings (which explains why they are naturally curved). Most are gluten free (unless recipe calls for the use of beer, breadcrumbs). Australian beef, Brazilian chicken, Spanish and Canadian Pork sausages are growth hormone-free and antibiotic-free.
You will love: The juicy fresh tasting Lamb, Ginger, Coriander and Mint sausages ($39/kg), and the Thai style Pork sausages ($29/kg) – with fresh coriander leaves, lemongrass and just a little lick of chilli padi heat- these are meaty good quality bangers that are perfect with a cold beer.
Foodies: Fancy designing your own sausage? Huber’s will make your own creation in-house (minimum order of 5kg) – now that’s a BBQ conversation starter!
Something Saucy: Beerenberg Howie’s Barbecue Sauce – an Aussie barbie sauce, great with all red and white meats ($5.90).
Sausages: Ryan’s Grocery, which specialises in organic and free range meats, carry more than 10 different types of sausages from Organic Beef Steak & Merlot Sausage ($30/kg), to Organic Lamb Lemon & Oregano Sausage ($28/kg), to the festive Free Range Pork Cranberry & Chestnut Sausage ($25/kg)

Meat sourced from: Organic beef, pork and lamb from Australia, Chicken from a local farm in Malaysia.
Credentials: Organic, hormone- and antibiotic-free, often grass fed and free range, gluten-free, MSG free and sulphate free. Some of their sausages are also preservative-free (no nitrates).
You will love: Looking for a classy sausage to have with smashed potatoes and a glass of red? Try their Organic Beef Steak & Merlot with fresh merlot, parsley and pepper. We were impressed with the size of Ryan’s Grocery sausages – the biggest, fattest sausages we have ever seen, juicy and meaty to boot.
Something Saucy: Sweet and spicy Latasha’s Kitchen Jalapeño Onion Relish ($15.95)
Sausages: 13 different sausage varieties made fresh on a daily basis, ranging from pork, lamb and beef to chicken. They also sell Australian Pork sausage meat ($29.90) for homemade sausage rolls and scotch eggs.

Credentials: Grass-fed beef, wheat free (rice flour used), not organic but emphasis on animals reared using sustainable farming without growth hormones, steroids or antibiotics in feed.

Something Saucy: Truffle Mustard ($24.90) — Dijon mustard with black truffle make a unique mustard for simple pork bangers.

You will love: The good ole British Organic Rhug Estate Lamb and Mint ($57/kg) – great for making posh sausages and mash. The Applegate brand (which are precooked) has a bit more ‘processed’ taste due to the texture of the meat and the lack of bite (as sausages are made with no casing).
Something Saucy: Pur Beetroot Ketchup – a muted earthiness with a slight kick from the addition of raspberry vinegar ($7.90)

Make Your Own Ketchup
Making your own ketchup is super easy and you can be smug with your friends in the knowledge that you actually made your own!
Sugar-Free Homemade Ketchup
- 1 ½ cup tomato passata
- 2 Tablespoons tomato paste
- 7 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- ¼ cup maple syrup (or to taste)
- pinch sea salt
- pinch garlic powder
- pinch allspice
- small pinch cayenne pepper (optional)
- 2 bay leaves
- Bring to a simmer on the stove then lower heat and cook for around 20 minutes until sauce thickens and liquid reduces.
- When cool, pour into a sterilised glass jar or bottle. Refrigerate.
