In need of a detox (digital or otherwise), mama? Our Managing Director Emilie checks in to Thailand’s new Amatara Phuket… and checks out feeling like a new woman

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the daily grind, we mamas need (read deserve) a break from time to time. We need to take a step back from our busy lifestyles and turn the focus back onto us. This is when you might think holidays!, but actually holidays can sometimes be more stressful than relaxing. So how do you unwind? Think wellness resorts. I tested a brand new kid on the block, located less than two hours’ flight away and that will leave you feeling thoroughly rested and rejuvenated: Amatara Resort & Wellness.

Amatara Resort & Wellness is a small slice of paradise located at the majestic Cape Panwa, less than an hour away by car from Phuket International Airport. The resort is all about subtle luxury, mixing beautiful Thai and Western influences.

Upon arrival, I was welcomed by Phoebe Boonkerd, the resorts’ Wellness Director. She has an impressive background with more than 15 years’ experience in wellness, including the last five at Thailand’s renowned Chiva Som Resort. She is also the mastermind behind the whole wellness program at Amatara. After our lovely chat, I met with Yana, my Wellness Consultant with whom I discussed my concerns and my goals for my 3-day stay. She put together a personalised programme incorporating treatments, fitness classes, and massages that would keep me busy for the duration of my stay.

It’s worth mentioning that Amatara will cater for absolutely everyone, whether you are looking for stress-relief, weight management, physical reformation or just rest and relaxation, their wellness consultant will carefully tailor their packages to meet your needs. If it’s exercise you’re after, they offer a variety of classes including Yoga, TRX, cycling, meditation, Pranyama breathing, Muay Thai, Pilates or even Fitball classes. If you just want to relax, you can simply lounge by the beautiful outdoor pool.

I opted for their 3-day detox package, which includes five juices per day, a colon hydrotherapy, a Chi Nei Tsang detoxifying abdominal massage, an Abhyanga or detoxifying Ayurvedic massage, a Thai Hammam Journey, a private yoga class and daily one hour signature Royal Amatara massages. I also chose to attend morning yoga classes with their resident Yoga Master Uttam. He was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. After the first day I felt my whole body relax as I settled into my new routine of yoga, juices and treatments.

The spa, where you will spend most of your time, is located in a separate building from the main hotel and offers 12 beautiful and spacious treatment rooms, a Hamman room and a detox room. All the therapists are excellent and extremely friendly. My favourite treatments were the Chi Nei Tsang stomach massage, which eliminates any feelings of stress and aids digestion, and the the Abyangha Massage, a full body, warm oil massage prized in Ayurvedic tradition for its rejuvenating and detoxifying benefits.

Amatara Spa Thai Hammam

All “meals” (or in my case juices) were taken at The Retreat, which is a little out of the way, and that is probably my only complaint as I had to make my way there five times a day. But the juices were always fresh and delicious and you could choose between five different blends.

The Retreat is reserved for Wellness Retreat and Pool Villa guests for breakfast, but it opens to all guests for lunch and dinner to serve wellness cuisine. Apart from The Retreat, the resort has another two restaurants: The Grill and The Restaurant. The Grill serves seafood and meat in a variety of local and international styles. The Restaurant is their all day-dining restaurant featuring flavors of traditional Thai cuisine, Asian influences and international specialties.

Amatara Resort & Wellness Ocean Pool Villa

I was staying in an Ocean Pool Villa, 150sqm of pure luxury and comfort: oversized bathroom, oversized bedroom with a lounge/reading area, private pool and sundeck, much too big for my little self but I enjoyed the space and above all the privacy. The Villa comes with complimentary well-stocked mini bar, daily laundry and pressing service of up to four pieces per person. So you get to go home with clean clothes!

Amatara Resort & Wellness kids Club

Amatara offers a variety of rooms to suit every budget and they also cater to families, with a kids’ club that opens daily from 8am to 8pm and welcomes children from 4 to 12 years old free of charge. So you can indulge in your spa treatments guilt-free knowing your kids are being entertained by the club’s extensive range of creative and edutainment programmes, fun games, toys, and cartoon books.

I arrived tired and stressed and left feeling relaxed, rested, rejuvenated and full of positive energy. Thank you Amatara! I hope to be back soon.
