Let’s put those makeup meltdown days behind us! Here’s exactly how you can keep a flawless face for longer.
You can’t just keep yourself cooped up in the air conditioned office for the sake of your face! The heat may be our main enemy in the struggle to keep makeup looking fresh all day, but we can overcome the obstacles. Read on below for all the tips you need to keep your makeup lasting longer.
1. Thoroughly-cleansed Skin
A clean canvas holds makeup the best, so make sure you give a thorough cleanse and allow time for products that come afterwards (like toner, moisturiser, sunscreen, etc.) to absorb between each step. If you have the time, go the whole nine yards and give yourself a luxurious exfoliation and mask before applying makeup. It doesn’t hurt that your skin will look amazing, too!
2. Get a Primer
Personally, I haven’t come across a primer that has really made a difference in the lasting power of my makeup, so I go without it. However, if you’re desperate to try anything you can get your hands on (despite trying all the other tips in this list!), silicone-based primers or those that have glycerin in their ingredients list are great, and will ensure any makeup you apply on top will not budge until you remove it at the end of the day. It’s worth a shot!
3. Invest in Waterproof Products
Have a big problem with getting oily or makeup smudging throughout the day? Waterproof or matte makeup are your best bet. While these can sometimes be a little on the heavier side, I suggest you reserve these for days when you really can’t spare any excuse for a flawless full-day face. If you have to choose, the top products to go waterproof or matte with are: foundation, mascara, eyebrow pomade/gel/pencil and long-wear lipstick.
4. Setting and Fixing Sprays
They always say that tons of powder will set your makeup and prevent it from slipping and sliding around your face, but it also means that you’ll be walking around looking unflatteringly over-powdered. Setting and fixing sprays are the ultimate allies to a more natural finish to your skin, while still keeping makeup intact despite the heat. Once you’re happy with your look for the day, give yourself a generous spritz of setting spray (I love a combo of MAC’s Prep + Prime Fix+ and Urban Decay’s All-Nighter setting spray) and let it sit for a few minutes. You’ll see that your powder has melted into the skin and will look that way throughout the day.
5. Keep a Bag of On-the-go Essentials
Touch-ups can be tiresome, but we all have to admit that the lipstick we had on this morning isn’t going to look exactly the same after a hearty bowl of laksa or zi char during lunch. Keep a small makeup bag handy with all the essentials for the day: the lipstick you have on, powder, concealer and facial tissues to blot with.
