Fancy a watching a stylish flick? These fashion films are our picks of the best.
This is arguably the most important month for fashion, with all the glossies churning out their highly-prized September issues. The runways will be filling up with models and all the hottest designers for fashion weeks in Milan, Paris, London and New York, where all the latest Fall/Winter trends will be showcased. Get into the spirit of things and whack on one of these Five Fashion Films for some stylish inspiration:
1. Dior and I
I recently watched this on a plane journey from Hong Kong to France and it couldn’t have made me more excited about touching down on “haute couture soil”. I’m no fashion fiend, but I couldn’t help but be swept up in this artfully directed documentary about Raf Simons’ journey into the house of Dior. It’s fascinating to see what goes into a couture collection and the setting of the final show is pretty spectacular (think gobsmackingly gorgeous floral backdrops to a 50s silhouette inspired collection!). You’ve got to appreciate the attention to detail and the craftsmanship!
Released this year, “Iris” is the late, legendary documentary maker Albert Maysles’ final film. It follows 93 year old style icon Iris Apfel, who has modelled in Kate Spade’s most recent campaign and is known for her unique style. The documentary explores Iris’ creativity, her passion for fashion and her willingness to experiment. This is definitely on my must-watch list for a huge blast of inspiration… you can only hope to be as kick-ass as Iris when you’re in your 90s!
3. Coco Before Chanel
If you’re a fan of this iconic brand and the woman behind it, then this is not a film to miss. I’m personally a huge fan of the actress Audrey Tatou (yes – I’m one of those girls obsessed with ‘Amelie’…) and she manages to portray a different, more personal side of Coco, looking at her life before fashion.
4. The September Issue
‘Tis the season… get an insight into the busy run-up to the publishing of Vogue’s epic September issue. You’ll get a sneak peek into what it takes to put together this legendary fashion magazine, with behind scenes snaps of Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington in action.
5. The Devil Wears Prada
Now this is the definition of a modern classic. With awesome actresses Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt steering this funny film (based on the best selling book), you know it’s going to be good. “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking”.
*And as a bonus film… if you’re craving a good giggle, you can’t miss the outrageous Zoolander with Ben Stiller – perfect that Blue Steel!*
